[EXHIBITION] A Monument to Respect and Love. Wilhelm von Humboldt and the Basque Country in 1800

Co-curator of the exhibition “A Monument to Respect and Love. Wilhelm von Humboldt and the Basque Country in 1800” at the Musée Basque et de l’histoire de Bayonne (10 July 2026 – 10 January 2027).

The exhibition’s guiding thread emerged from Humboldt’s text based on his travel notes (1801), recently published by Éditions Honoré Champion in a translation prepared under the direction of Céline Trautmann-Waller, to which I contributed.

The exhibition is curated overall by Jacques Battesti, curator and collections manager at the Musée Basque.

For my part, I invited fellow artists and lecturers at the École supérieure d’art Pays Basque – Nagore Amenabarro, Bernard Hausseguy, Kolet Goyhenetche, Jana Lottenburger and Thomas Loyatho – as well as Master’s-level art students in Bayonne and Bilbao – Inés Aldazabal, Quentin Crucet, Emmanuel Kus, Thierry Maton and Claudia Pastor Nivert – to forge connections with the text from perspectives grounded in their diverse artistic practices.

A collaborative film was also produced by students from the ESAPB video workshop – Élise Blanchard, Kaarina Gain, Julien Higos, Ilona Iturria and Timothée Vassal – with the invaluable support of my colleague Maddi Barber, and colleagues Frédéric Gayel and Margaux Liesenborghs: Hitzak ahots, featuring Martin Alberdi, Jasone Lasuen, Maialen Arteaga and other participants in the exhibition project.

Our thanks to the Euskampus Foundation (EmPACT i3) for its support.
