Moins connues en revanche sont ses prises de position radicales sur l\u2019art de son temps. Comblant ce manque, les presses de l\u2019ENS-PSL rassemblent dans une riche \u00e9dition trois textes publi\u00e9s en 1949, 1951et 1978 sous le titre <em>En finir avec les avant-gardes. <\/em>Ce sp\u00e9cialiste de la Renaissance fut contemporain de Pasolini, lequel disait \u00e0 son sujet&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;Cet \u00e9ternel, ce diabolique, cet inconnu : Cesare Brandi est l\u2019homme le plus rare et le plus difficile que j\u2019aie rencontr\u00e9&nbsp;\u00bb. En 1966, Pasolini signe d\u2019ailleurs un article dont il reprend le titre d\u2019un des trois essais ici publi\u00e9s&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;La fin de l\u2019avant-garde&nbsp;\u00bb. Si pareille formule sonne famili\u00e8re aux oreilles d\u2019un contemporain du XXI<sup>e<\/sup> s., alors que postmodernisme et d\u00e9construction des grands r\u00e9cits appartiennent d\u00e9sormais \u00e0 la tradition, l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat de lire Brandi aujourd\u2019hui r\u00e9side dans le fait d\u2019emprunter un autre chemin pour arriver au m\u00eame constat. Sa condamnation sans appel des avant-gardes \u00e0 l\u2019exception du cubisme est bien entendu excessive \u2013 dada\u00efsme, surr\u00e9alisme, abstraction, art conceptuel, jazz et cin\u00e9ma, tout y passe \u2013, h\u00e9riti\u00e8res selon lui de ce qu\u2019il y a de pire dans le romantisme, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire d\u2019un subjectivisme ravageur invalidant toute th\u00e9orie solide de la forme&nbsp;; n\u00e9anmoins sa verve pol\u00e9mique contre l\u2019id\u00e9e d\u2019un art enti\u00e8rement tourn\u00e9 vers le futur, lib\u00e9r\u00e9 de la tradition et carburant \u00e0 la nouveaut\u00e9, vient nous rappeler que tout discours sur l\u2019art, a fortiori sur son histoire, ne peut faire l\u2019\u00e9conomie d\u2019une philosophie de l\u2019histoire.
